Lethabo Nxumalo is an award-winning writer, researcher, and content producer whose work lives at the intersection of sports, culture, and politics.
A graduate of Point Park University (a liberal arts college in Pittsburgh) with a degree in Film and Digital Arts, she has lived and worked across the United States, Spain, Norway, and South Africa, primarily covering basketball and football while also writing about action sports and gender in sport. Her bylines span global platforms like ESPN, NPR, Rest of World and Red Bulletin, as well as African publications such as Africa is a Country, New Frame, The Continent, and Mail & Guardian.
Lethabo has interviewed athletes ranging from NBA Hall of Famer James Worthy to Olympic gold medalist Roland Schoeman. She has also written about fashion and youth culture for Red Bull, Bubblegum Club, Destiny Magazine, and Shelflife Magazine.
In the realm of television and the screen, she has produced for Beautiful News (Mercedes-Benz sponsored content), Boiler Room, and Red Bull, and written 32 episodes for the NBA Life Show on South Africa’s national broadcaster, SABC. She also served as co-host of Watching the W, a web show dedicated to women’s basketball. The show amassed over 200 000 views on YouTube.
Whether unpacking the gender pay gap in football or exploring how the afterlife of slavery and colonialism shape contemporary sports culture, Lethabo’s creative practice is as much about balling as it is about resistance. Imagine if Judith Butler, sports journalism, and Instagram fashions raised a loud-mouthed, stats-obsessed child. That’s pretty much Lethabo.
When she is not furiously typing fast, she’s likely redoing Beyoncé choreography in her living room or watching a copious amount of reality TV.
